What are we doing?

We are reviewing the Short Breaks/support packages currently on offer in Bury for Children and Young People with Disabilities. We will be doing this with parent/carer representatives, children and young people and other stakeholders.

To help inform this work we need to capture the views and experiences of parents/carers, children and young people so they can influence decision making.

What is a Short Break?

A Short Break provides an opportunity for children and young people with disabilities to have time away from their parents/carers and benefit from new interests, activities and friendships. It also provides an opportunity for parents/carers to have a break from their caring responsibilities.

Short Breaks can include day, evening, weekend or holiday activities that take place in the child or young person’s own home, a community or residential setting. Short Breaks range from supporting children and young people to access universal/mainstream services to providing specialist Short Break Services.

How to access a Short Break

In Bury Short Break Services are targeted for children and young people who need additional support to access and engage in a social and leisure activities at home and in the community. The Children with Disabilities Service will undertake an assessment to look at the support which may be needed.

The SEND Local Offer Bury has details, including eligibility, accessibility and cost, of social and leisure opportunities available for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities age 0 to 25 that can be accessed without an assessment and parents can self-refer.

As part of this survey we are also keen to know what leisure and social opportunities children and young people in Bury access. These are activities which are open to all and do not need a social care assessment.

The current review does not include residential / overnight respite provision.

What happens next?

We will analyse the results of the survey and they will be used in the design and development of Short Breaks Services. We will update this One Community page with the results and they will also be shared with the networks of other stakeholders.
